Black August

Celebrating Black August this month has definitely opened up conversations in our community regarding our history, involvement, and future.

Black August has given us the opportunity to commemorate the freedom fighters of the Black Liberation movement. Political prisoners continue to fight to highlight black resistance against racial oppression. Learn more about Black August here

Centering Wholeness Counseling specialty is helping individuals and communities affected by incarceration thrive, we do this through our counseling services or FREE community events.

Knowing that the Black August movement started in prison due to the mistreatment and injustice confirms that there are ways, we on the other side can support the initiatives by giving second chances and listening to their cry for help.

Alice Mills Mai, our founder/clinical director became passionate about empowering individuals and communities affected by incarceration when she came across the opportunity to work at Riker’s Island, where she witnessed many of the harsh realities these communities face.

The stories of these individuals/communities do not end in prison, once released from prison individuals/communities continue to face struggles like stigma, lack of job opportunities, housing, and a support system. All these struggles can lead to re-incarceration or over-policing of neighborhoods which often leads to police brutality or even death.

In Centering Wholeness Counseling we believe the healing starts from the inside, understanding that there is an identity greater than past actions or mistakes.

The power of affirmation can really help shape and renew minds and hearts that have been stressed, disturbed, and broken by a system and people that continue to fail to see the good in the midst of the worst circumstances.

If you or anyone in your family or community has been affected by incarceration. We’d like to tell you that you are not alone! There are people and organizations like Centering Wholeness Counseling that want to help and are excited to equip you to thrive, this is why we have put together affirmations that can help you reframe the view you have about yourself and the world and also empower you to be the change you want to be.
